Railway Accident Files Uncovered

December 12th 1945. Gwr Locomotive Wraysbury Hall leaves Heavy Goods train bound for Swindon works on a platform right outside of London Paddington station in order to communicate with other locomotives. The locomotive shunting the train and having it arranged No. 4565 was arriving at the platform with the full goods train had completed her job and was waiting to help push the heavy goods train to the station it had been ordered to go to. 30 minutes had passed and Locomotive No. 6969 is not seen. No. 4565 sets off to look for her. in the process leaving the unattended goods train on the mainline. Once she was found and pulled forcefully out of shed track number 4 and out to the mainline, they were ready to take the goods. Unfortunately, locomotive No. 2872 was bound to this station at the same time with a heavy goods train. There was an effort to stop the heavy goods train built the crew had to braise for impact as the locomotive hit the train head on going at about 50 miles per hour. No.2872 was thrown completely off the rails along with 22 of its rolling stock being pulled, 5 of which were destroyed completely, and 19 of the goods train waiting at the platform 9 of which were destroyed with only fractions of the brake van able to be found.

Of the people involved there were no fatalities, but 25 serious

injuries including both driver and fireman of No.2872 and the guard

who was not in the van at the time, and 27 minor injuries. The

incident took roughly a month to fix to only the extent of more rail

traffic to run through that section of the line. However, the full

restoration took roughly a year. It was deemed that locomotive No.

6969 was the cause of the accident along with the crew operating

and supervising her at the time. all of which were dealt with in an

appropriate manner.
